Hyper

Written in 2008

As parents we like to believe or make-believe that our children are picture-perfect and gene-perfect. So even if there is an aberration you try to avoid it until you can no longer escape.
A year back Ash's paediatrician had suggested that we meet a particular doctor to check if Ash had ADHD or PDD. He didnt insist since he didnt think an early intervention was needed - he beleived more in a wait-and-watch policy. So we played along and I buried the referral letter in the medical file. But the school interview made us sit up right and do something about "his fidgety ways and lack of speech clarity".
So I booked an appointment, took a day off yesterday and escorted Ash to a development analyst near Loyola College. And the doctor judged that it is ADHD that is making him so hyper. Should be able to correct with medication, 6-12 months treatment and care, he said. We need to take him to a speech therapist after a month.
Dr. Virudhagirinathan, the child psychologist Ash's paediatrician had referred us to, advised me to take some months leave if possible so that he gets more parental attention. He has stressed on parental care and social interaction for the kid. Or Mira could end up imbibing his ways.
The doctor observed him and gave him some tests during that one-hour session and found his IQ above average. But he found that his speech had a nasal twang, lacked clarity and needed better vocabulary.
The dr advised me to remove him from the school he is going too since he says it is meant for special kids and it could have a retro effect on him - like a kid living in a slum colony learning the ways of the place he lives in.
So today we sent him to his old playschool, the one Mira goes to now, on a trial basis. The ladies running the place, who had been a bit hesitant to take him since in his last stint he had bitten a few kids on a couple of occasions, were pleased with his behaviour when V went to pick him up at lunchtime. They said he understood things, could recite his ABCs and 123s, and seemed deeply caring about his lil sister.
If all goes well, we hope to keep both kids at the playschool till 1.30 p.m. by which time they would feed them lunch too. The fee for staying till 1.30 is a little higher than till 12 noon, but this timing should suit our partime maid better - she can finish her chores and pick up the kids and stay till we return.
