Two adolescents

With the Netflix series Adolescence being recommended as a must-watch for parents and teens, I watched it in two sittings during the Eid break this week. It was a revelation - the actual state of state schools in the UK, the kind of language kids use, their behaviour or lack of respect towards teachers, and so on. Most importantly, it opened a whole new world of children in the age of the Internet -- the incel culture, Andrew Tate, the actual meaning of various emojis etc.

It also brought to mind a difficult phase -- maybe not completely over -- in our parenting lives when the children passed through adolescence. Covid and being home-bound compounded the problem. The Internet ruled their lives and we were clueless about the worlds they frequented often past midnight. Age 13-17 is probably the toughest for both parties, and if they pass the trial by fire without much incident, we should count ourselves lucky.
