If the dog looked sickly and in torment in the last picture, it indeed must have been. I was just trying to think it was cuteness overload as it chose my dad's feet to snuggle up to while he was reading the newspapers.
The puppy started having blood in his stools the day after it came on Friday, Aug 5. I messaged the breeder in Haripad who sold the dog to us, and he prescribed 2 medicines (which were antibiotics and not stuff he should have) and deworming medicines. Bro had him dewormed but it didnt help.
Brother and our help KK took him to the Government Veterinary Hospital in the town, the only place open on Sunday (most shops and institutions in Kerala are closed on Sunday). The vet, a very efficient Dr Cecily according to bro, suspected parvo virus and prescribed daily injections for a few days. She said 'parvo is spreading because unscrupulous breeders are separating puppies from mothers before they are 8 weeks old. The puppies don't get the immunity from the mom's milk'. It also had flaky skin from poor diet/care.
Bro suspects the breeder - who got us the pup from his friend saying the dad lab was his stud while the bitch mom was in Kattapana in another district - deliberately foisted a sick dog on us. I dont understand why someone would take their dog across districts for breeding. Whatever, the pup seems to have left its mother's warmth too early.
Today, the dog began retching and had to be taken again; the dr is hoping it is a bacterial infection and will take an x-ray tomorrow if his cough doesnt improve.
However, I am hoping fervently the doggie will survive as it is the centre of attention at home. Neighbours come calling to see it.
I meant to write a Google review _ I had chosen the kennel because of the positive reviews and also because a friend had got her lab from him 2 years back - but the breeder is likely to get it removed.
The review I wrote on Charly's Kennel in Adur was removed by the owner, I suspect. He sold us a mixed breed some years ago showing the KCI certificate of a pure lab bitch and claiming it was its mother. The mother however sat away from the pups on sale, which we realised only later. It was perennialy greedy for food and difficult to train, so dad gave it away after a few months.
Time authorities paid attention to breeding laws in Kerala.
