Canteen thrills

The school canteen run by Ceasers confectionary has opened once again - after more than a year of COVID-induced shutdown. So Ash requested some cash - earlier they could buy using their RFID or school ID card as the debit card, but that was stopped  - to buy something for himself and his best friend Ibrahim who was celebrating his birthday.

However Ibbu declined as he had his own money, so our man had a snack each on the two boys' break in school. Since school has separate wings for girls and boys after grade 6, the break timings are different for either sexes. All UAE schools follow the sexes separation, some even have separate campuses. The school bus is mixed though, and god knows how (insta, bus etc etc) the boys know the interesting girls and vice versa. Mira tells me they date and go on proms, and lamented her lack of skill in landing any (which she blamed on us old-fashioned parents).

Mira got some canteen money from her dad but the first-day crowd and stampede was such that she didnt get anything interesting. She had to buy the most expensive of the snack - everything is priced under 10 dirhams - which had not many takers.

The shift from home learning to school learning has meant that the kids are ravenous most of the time. If earlier Mira could skip breakfast and lunch altogether as part of her fad diets, she needs 2-3 items to see her through the 9 hours away from home (6 am to 3 pm). So along with a chicken sandwich or pasta that I churn out, a store-bought croissant and juice satisfies their hunger. Mira needs a flask of black coffee to ward off sleep as well as lose weight.

And I need better ideas for making the lunch box interesting for the children.
