Onam 2021

Although every year I somehow gather the energy to cook up an Onasadya, this year I had no inclination to do so. Partly because V had offered to take us for a sadya at Dubai Grand hotel on Friday noon. Saturday was the real Onam, but a good many people like me, lazy to make their own feast, turned up in traditional attire.

However it was not all that enjoyable- for one, we had to wait in line, and then wait another 10 min for them to serve us. The second helpings was minimal and sporadic and I kept wishing that we had gone to my favorite central Kerala restaurant Aaramam where some of the waiters are like family as they’ve been seeing us for long.

On Saturday V took his colleagues to Naalukettu again, so I just had to make lunch for us three at home - the kids only wanted parippu curry and papad, I added a thoren and fry and adapradhaman. The children wore their Onam finery while we parents wore Fabindia kurtas procured the previous night. In the end, the pictures made it look like a decent celebration- though not the same fun as when we did potluck with Vinod’s bro and family in the early years here.
