The best news this Vishu was that CBSE is cancelling Grade 10 Board exams (though it is not good news for 12th graders as their exams have been postponed). Though I expected this development, I couldnt confirm it to Mira even as she kept asking but not studying anything after the second pre-Boards got over. Cant blame her as the endless wait for exams was trying even for the nerds in class.
After all the blows Modizee has dealt on Indian economy and the working class, he has at last done something meaningful in all these years. Not that they had a choice with spike in COVID cases spiralling out of control in many States. The elections were the last straw that broke the camel's back - the crowds at the rallies forgot masks and social distancing while leaders turned a blind eye to protocols.
Compulsory Board exams for Grade 10 was re-introduced 3 years back only. For many years, students could opt for the school exam or Board exams. With India sitting on a ticking time-bomb, it was just not fair to let children risk their health to write exams. The last pre-Boards itself meant two (free here) PCR tests at school for Mira.
She is now hoping to get her stream of choice - Commerce - in the same school. As someone who dislikes science and social studies or anything that requires mugging up theories, Mira says she has no option if she doesnt get it. Or we change school.
Vishu was a tame affair as we display none of the fervour on Onam day to cook sadya. Vinod probably tired after the long veg diet during Lent showed no interest in buying a take-away meal from the restaurants. Instead, I made a few dishes and payasam but skipped the banana leaf. For dinner, Vinod got us a Malayalee's favourite food - parotta and beef.
But nothing like beginning a Malayalam New Year with the boon of a cancelled exam!
