Someone knocked at the door the other day. The peephole revealed a tall figure in a black gown. Although I often shy about opening the door to strangers, I took a chance. And there stood a beaming Mazida with a "bhabhee aap kaise ho" ready on her lips.

Mazida was my partimer at hourly rates before I found the Sri Lankan. Though I didn't understand much of her dialect of Hindi, I enjoyed conversing with her.

She lived in Ajman and used a car lift to reach her workplaces in Sharjah and Dubai. This time she had a surprise for me. "I learnt driving, got a license and a second hand car." That was the most happy and optimistic news I had heard in recent times. Here was a Bangla girl, married off at 13 and ditched by her husband in 3 months time, and found her way to the 🇦🇪 to make a living for herself and for her little daughter. She's a role model.
