Just finished watching Nizhal. My grand expectations about the film fell like a pack of cards. What is supposed to be a crime thriller has none of the edge of the seat and loud moments. It all looks a bit too tame and quiet.
The lead actors are too grave and unsmiling as if weighed in by the problems around them. Kunchako, nursing a failed love affair, and Nayantara, a widow with a chirpy young son, make this one shadow of a movie. Young Izin and protagonist John Baby's friends make up for the lack of sound and warmth in this movie.
Curiously, boy is made to look too cute with his long locks. While schools in general dont allow children to grow hair that long, the child actor alone has that privilege in school.
Some things just dont gel right. Why did the CJM need an accident? To hallucinate? To have something in common with the boy's imagination?Anyway he looks pretty funny with all that face gear - it makes up for the lack of humour in the film.
Nayan seems to have forgotten to smile or be her natural self after she became one of South's leading ladies. Though now she is a pale image of her former glorious self. Like in Puthiya Niyamam with Mammooty, she is brooding and serious. I have not liked her in any other movie after Manassinakkare, her debut film with Jayaram.
The climax is interesting though the end came too soon, like for the villain. And the viewer is left to speculate if the hero and heroine will marry or have a platonic relationship. Both seem too bogged down by their past to even force a smile.
With some better direction, we could have got a more interesting story development. The aerial visuals are breathtaking and showcase Kerala for you.
