Not too long ago, the three of us (that excludes the husband at work) would sit down for lunch and discuss random things from religion to politics. On a friend's suggestion, I started quizzing the kids on current affairs/GK which helped to improve their general awareness.
But this practice has become non-existent in the past one year or more. Teens are not interested in talking to old fashioned parents, but prefer to watch a Youtube video or a movie as they relish their meals. Ash for instance is busy watching Jordindians or Zubair something, which is comedy in Arabic English. On days that I join him for lunch nowadays, I must admit that I tend to smile as I overhear the dialogues.
Dinner was also a TV affair and not a family affair until we got a 6 seater dining table recently. Ash/Mira would switch on Malayalam comedy on TV, and father and kids would have their eyes glued to the TV as they chewed their chapatis. My contention - based on Facebook and Whatsapp gyan - that supper should be family time fell on deaf ears. However, the new table seating arrangement doesn't seem comfortable for TV viewing, so we have quieter meal times these days.
I suspect the kids were using TV to escape the father's dinner sermons.
